EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
