In the dying moments, pure elation broke out for Chelsea and caretaker boss Calum McFarlane as Enzo Fernández bundled in a dramatic equaliser. The goal left Pep Guardiola ranting in frustration and provided the temporary Chelsea manager a career-defining moment. On paper, Guardiola versus McFarlane was the Premier League's most pronounced managerial mismatch in class, making the memory of Fernández's pivotal intervention one to warm the 40-year-old for years to come.

A Stark Contrast in Pedigree

On the City bench was the most decorated manager of his time, a man with 40 trophies for elite clubs Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City, taking charge of his 1,012th match. In the opposite technical area, stood a former coach at lower-league sides Croydon and Whyteleafe, who had served in City's own academy and stepped up to make his first-team debut after being temporarily promoted from his regular role overseeing Chelsea's youth teams.

Factoring in a host of absences, headlined by Chelsea's important midfielder Moisés Caicedo (suspended) and goalkeeper Robert Sánchez (injured), McFarlane's task started out as a mission that seemed Mission: Impossible.

Another element of his game plan was to disrupt at every turn. Jeers rang out whenever Chelsea slowed at a dead ball, a sure sign the City's tempo was being disrupted and the Guardiola plan was being thwarted.
